Fractions that are equal in value are called equivalent fractions.
Examples:
- Fractions equivalent to 1/2 are 2/4, 3/6, 4/8, 5/10, 6/12 , 7/14
- Fractions equivalent to 1/3 are 2/6, 3/9, 4/12, 5/15, 6/18
- Fractions equivalent to 1/4 are 2/8, 3/12, 4/16, 5/20, 6/24
- Fractions equivalent to 1/5 are 2/10, 3/15, 4/20, 5/25, 6/30
- Fractions equivalent to 3/5 are 6/10, 9/15, 12/20
To simplify or reduce a fraction to the lowest terms, divide both numerator and denominator by a common divisor.
Example:
Simplify 4/8
The common divisor is 4
4/8 = 4÷4 /8÷4 =1/2
The equivalent fraction for the above is 1/2
Answer: 1/2
