  • To reduce an improper fraction to lowest terms, divide the numerator and denominator by their greatest common factor (GCF). This is also called simplifying the fraction.
  • We reduce a fraction to lowest terms by finding an equivalent fraction in which the numerator and denominator are as small as possible.
  • This means that there is no number, except 1, that can be divided evenly into both the numerator and the denominator.
Example: Reduce 20/16 to the simplest form.
Common factor of 20 and 16 is 2
Therefore 20/16 can be written as 10/8
Common factor of 10 and 18 is 2

20/16 = 10/8 = 5/4
