9.5 Percentages

Percent (or percentage) means "out of 100." We use the percent symbol (%) as a way to write a fraction with a common denominator of 100.

For example, instead of saying "50 out of every 100 students are girls," we say "50% of students are girls."

Method

  1. Write the given percentage as a fraction with denominator 100.
  2. Multiply this fraction with the given number.
Example:
50% of 40
(50/100)*40 = 20
Answer: 20

Example:
25% of 48
(25/100)*48 = 12
Answer: 12

Example:
222% of 77
(222/100)*77 = 176
Answer: 176

Example:
1/3% of 598
(1/3 / 100)*598 = 2
Answer: 2

Example:
118% of 56
(118/100)*56 = 72
Answer: 72

Example:
40% of 45
(40/100)*45 = 18
Answer: 18
