Grade 5 - Mathematics
1.23 Compare and Order Numbers

  1. If a number has more digits than another, it is greater of the two.

We use the symbols > (greater than) and < (less than) to show the comparison.

    For example:
    12456 > 4569 or 4932 < 10234

    9234 < 20003 or 34567 > 9823

    • If two numbers have the same number of digits, we compare them by their extreme left-most digits. The number with the greater digit is greater.

    • If their extreme left-most digits are the same, we compare the next digit to the right and so on.

      5234 > 4987
      27987 > 26899
      56789 > 56734
      23456 < 23457

  2. We can compare two different numbers by looking at their positions on the number line.
For any two numbers on the number line, the number on the right is greater than the number on the left.

Note: Every positive number is greater than any negative number.

    Example:
    47 > -74
    -45 < -44

Directions: Compare the following numbers. Write at least ten examples of your own comparing numbers (include both positive and negative numbers).
