9.4 Decimal Problems

Converting decimals to fractions
  1. Write the number without the decimal point.
  2. Divide the number with as many tens as the number of digits after the decimal point.
Example: Convert 0.75 to a fraction.
Numerator - 75
Denominator - 100 (since there are 2 numbers after the decimal point)
Answer: 75/100
Adding decimals
Add 0.35 and 0.42


  1. Take a square divide into hundred parts.
  2. Mark 0.35 by shading 3 tenths and colouring 5 hundreths.
  3. Similarly mark o.42 by shading 4 tenths and colouring 2 hundredths.
  4. Now count the total number of tenths and hundredths in the square.
Answer: 0.77
Subtracting decimals


  1. Write the decimals one below the other as shown.
  2. Subtract as shown.
Answer: 1.76
