Steps:
1. Break each monomials into the simplest numerical and literal
factors.
2. Find all numerical and literal factors that divide each of the given
monomials.
3. Multiply such numerical and literal factors to get the HCF.
Example: 12a, 6a^{2}, 24a^{3} find the HCF of the given monomials.
Solution: Break each monomials into the simplest numerical and literal
factors,
we get,
12a = 3 * 2 * 2 * a
6a^{2} = 3 * 2 * a * a
24a^{3} = 3 * 2 * 2 * 2 * a * a * a
Greatest numerical factor that divides each monomial = 3 * 2 = 6
Greatest literal factor that divides each monomial = a
Therefore HCF of the given terms = 3 * 2 * a = 6a
