Addition of three mixed numbers with like denominators
Example:
5 4/7 + 2 3/7 + 3 1/7 = ?
Method 1:
Add integer parts: 5 + 2 + 3 = 10
Add fraction parts: 4/7 + 3/7 + 1/7 = 8/7 = 1 1/7
5 4/7 + 2 3/7 + 3 1/7 = 10 + 1 1/7 = 11 1/7
Method 2:
5 4/7 + 2 3/7 + 3 1/7
Convert mixed fractions to improper fractions and then add them.
5 4/7 + 2 3/7 + 3 1/7 = 39/7 + 17/7 + 22/7
= 78/7
= 11 1/7
Addition of three mixed numbers with unlike denominators
Example:
3 1/8 + 2 1/2 + 4 3/5 = ?
Method 1:
Add integer parts: 3 + 2 + 4 = 9
Add fraction parts: 1/8 + 1/2 + 3/5 = 49/40 = 1 9/40
3 1/8 + 2 1/2 + 4 3/5 = 9 + 1 9/40 = 10 9/40
Method 2:
Convert mixed fractions to improper fractions and then add them.
3 1/8 + 2 1/2 + 4 3/5 = 25/8 + 5/2 + 23/5 = 818/80
= 10 9/40
