Multiplication of a Mixed Number and a Whole Number

Example: 2 4 1/3 = ?

Method 1:
Convert mixed fraction to improper fraction and then perform the multiplication.
2 4 1/3
= 2 x 13/3
= 26/3 (this is an improper fraction -- therefore, convert it to mixed fraction)
= 8 2/3

Method 2:
Distribute the multiplier 2, first to the whole number, then to the fraction.
2 4 = 8. And 2 1/3 = 2/3
= 8 2/3

Multiplication of two Mixed Numbers

Example: 1 2/3 x 2 1/4 = ?
Convert the mixed fractions to improper fractions and then perform the multiplication.
5/3 9/4
= 45/12
= 5/2 (this is an improper fraction -- therefore, convert it to mixed fraction)
= 2 1/2
