5.3 Kinds of Subtraction

There are four kinds of subtraction:
  • Compare
  • Additive
  • Subset
  • Take away
Compare: Comparing two quantities.
Example: Ages of two people

Additive: Comparing two quantities and addition performed to equate smaller quantity to the larger quantity.
Example: Number of days to be added to a week to reach 30 days.

Subset: A part of the whole quantity.
Example: Number of red balls from a basket containing many balls.

Take away: Finding the difference between the whole and the subset.
Example: Subtracting the number of Sundays from a month.


Directions: Write the kind of subtraction in each case. Also write at least five examples of your own for each kind.
Q 1: We need to read 60 hours to earn a pizza party. So far we have read 23 hours. How many hours do we still need to read? Name the type of subtraction.
