1.11 Applications of Simple Equations

Example: "Some number added to 7 gives 11," convert this word problem into a symbolic statement.
Solution:
Let the number be 'x'.
If x is added to 7, we get x+7.
According to the problem statement, this sum is equal to 11.
Therefore, symbolically the statement is x+7 = 11.
Directions: Convert the following word problems into symbolic statements. Also write at least 10 examples of your own.
Q 1: Some number increased by 35 gives 47.
x = 35 + 47
35x = 47
x + 35 = 47
x + 47 = 35

Q 2: 75 reduced by some number gives 37.
37 - x = 75
75 - x = 37
x - 75 = 37
x = 75 - 37

Q 3: Some number decreased by 50 gives 35.
x + 50 = 35
x + 35 = 50
x - 50 = 35
x = 35 - 50

Q 4: Twice a number gives 64.
x + 2 = 64
2x = 64
x = 64*2
2/x = 64

Q 5: Some number divided into 50 parts gives 5.
x/50 = 5
50/x = 5
x - 50 = 5
50x = 5

Q 6: Some number added to 15 gives 20.
x + 20 = 15
x + 15 = 20
15x = 20
x = 15 + 20

Q 7: Some number added to 11 gives 20.
x + 20 = 11
x = 11 + 20
x + 11 = 20
11x = 20

Q 8: 7 times a number gives 49.
7x = 49
7/x = 49
x + 7 = 49
x = 49*7
