3.5 Inner Planet Mars

The fourth planet from the Sun is Mars, named after the Roman god of war. Sometimes Mars can be seen in the night sky, even without a telescope. Mars is nicknamed the red planet, because of its orange- red color. That color comes from the large amount of rusty iron on the planetís rocky surface.

For many years, people thought that, among all the other planets in the solar system besides Earth, Mars was the one most likely to have life. In 1976, two Viking space probes, launched by the United States, landed on the surface of Mars and found no life. The Viking probes sent back pictures of a bare, rocky, dusty planet. Mars is about 4,230 miles in diameter. Mars has 2 tiny moons.
