### Grade 6 - Mathematics6.1 Mixed Fractions and Improper Fractions

Mixed Fraction (or Mixed Number) has a whole number and a fraction. Example: 3 1/2 NOTE: The operation in between the integer and fractional part in a mixed number is addition, not multiplication! In the above example, 3 1/2 = 3 + 1/2 and not 3 x 1/2 Improper Fraction is a fraction in which the numerator is greater than the denominator. Examples: 4/3, 5/4, 6/2, 56/12, 5/2 Converting mixed number to improper fraction: Example: Convert 2 7/2 into improper fraction. Improper Fraction = {(Whole number * Denominator) + Numerator}/Denominator. i.e., 2 7/2 = {(2*2) + 7}/2 = (4 + 7)/2 = 11/2. Converting improper fraction to a mixed number: Example: Convert 5/4 into a mixed fraction. Perform the division and obtain the mixed fraction as, Mixed Fraction = (Whole number) Remainder/Denominator. i.e., 5/4 = 1 1/4 Directions: Solve the following problems.
