The coordinate plane or Coordinate grid or Coordinate graph:
- The x-axis extends to the right and left of the origin. Notice that the numbers to the left of zero on the x-axis are negative.
- The y-axis extends above and below the origin. Notice that the numbers below zero on the y-axis are negative.
- The x-axis and the y-axis separate the coordinate plane into four quadrants.
- The x-axis and the y-axis separate the coordinate plane into four regions called quadrants.
- The quadrants are named I, II, III, and IV.
- Integer coordinates are pairs of integers that are used to determine points in a grid, relative to a special point called the origin. The origin has coordinates (0,0).
- Any other point in the grid has a pair of coordinates (x,y).
- The x value or x-coordinate tells how many steps left or right, the point is from the point (0,0).
- The y value or y-coordinate tells how many steps up or down the point is from the point (0,0).
- Using coordinates, we can give the location of any point in the grid, by simply using an ordered pair.
Directions: Answer the following questions using the coordinates grid shown above. Also graph at least ten points and name the quadrant and its ordered pair.
