Grade 8 English
2.2 Subjects and Nouns

A noun is a word that names a person, place or thing. Often a noun is the subject of a sentence. The subject tells who or what the sentence is about.
Example: Sue drank some punch.
In the above sentence Sue is the subject.

A sentence can have many nouns, but not all of them would be subjects.
Example: Fred caught a small fish in a big net.
In the above sentence Fred, fish and net are nouns, but only Fred is the subject.

Some sentences have two subjects.
Example: Jack and Jill went up the hill.
In the above sentence 'Jack' and 'Jill' are the subjects.

Usually, the noun that is the subject will come at the beginning of the sentence.
Example: Sally stayed at home all day.

Sometimes, other words will come before the subject. When this happens, look for who or what the sentence is about.
Example: After school, Dan walks to the library.
The sentence is about Dan and not school, therefore 'Dan' is the subject.
