Grade 5 - English Language
2.13 Punctuation - Apostrophe (')

  • To form the possessive case of a singular noun, add an apostrophe and an s.
    Examples: Bob's car, Mike's pen, Sally's party, Ken's bike

  • If the addition of an "s" produces an awkward sound, add only the apostrophe. Usually, this is when there is already a double "s" sound.
    Examples: Moses'; for old times' sake; for goodness' sake.

  • To form the possessive case of a plural noun, add an apostrophe after the s.
    Example: girls' teams.

  • If the plural form of the word does not end in s, add an apostrophe and an s.
    Example: women's team.

  • Use an apostrophe to show where letters have been omitted in a contraction.
    can't = cannot;
    it's = it is;

    Note that it's is different from its - it's is a contraction for "it is" and its is a possessive pronoun meaning "belonging to it".

  • An apostrophe is also used to show that one or more letters or numbers have been left out of numerals or words.
    class of '99 (19 is left out)
    goin' there (g is left out)

  • Don't use apostrophes for possessive pronouns or for noun plurals.
    Apostrophes should not be used with possessive pronouns because possessive pronouns already show possession -- they don't need an apostrophe. His, her, its, my, yours, ours are all possessive pronouns.
    wrong: his' book
    correct: his book
    wrong: The group made it's decision.
    correct: The group made its decision.

Directions: Choose if each sentence is punctuated correctly or incorrectly. On a sheet of paper, rewrite each of the apostrophe usage rules give above and also write your own example sentences for each rule. As a homework, read a book and find and write at least ten sentences containing apostrophes.
