2.15 Prepositions

A preposition is a word that comes before a noun or a pronoun and shows the relationship of that noun or pronoun to other words in the sentence.

The most common prepositions are:
about, above, across, after, against, along, among, around, at, before, behind, below, beneath, beside, between, beyond, but, by, despite, down, during, except, for, from, in, inside, into, like, near, of, off, on, onto, out, outside, over, past, since, through, throughout, till, to, toward, under, underneath, until, up, upon, with, within, and without.

The object of a preposition is a noun or pronoun that follows it and completes its meaning.

A prepositional phrase is made up of the preposition, its object, and any associated adjectives or adverbs. A prepositional phrase can function as a noun, an adjective, or an adverb.
prepositional phrase = preposition + object + adjective/adverb

Examples:
The girl with the green dress sang first.
with is the preposition
dress is the object of preposition
with the green dress is a prepositional phrase
