Grade 5 - English Language
1.5 Double Consonants

When adding endings such as ing and ed to verbs, use the following rules:

  • Double the final consonants of the verbs that have short vowel sounds and end with only one consonant. For example, rip becomes ripped; and beg becomes begging

  • Do not double the final consonant in words that already end in two consonants. For example, rock ends with two consonants, ck. So even though it has a short vowel sound, rock becomes rocked and not rockked!
Directions: Choose the correct 'ed' or 'ing' forms for following words. Also, write a few examples of your own for 'ed' and 'ing' words that have single and double consonants.
