 To multiply a pair of integers: If both numbers have the same sign, their product is the product of their absolute values, i.e., their product is positive. If the numbers have opposite signs, their product is the opposite of the product of their absolute values, i.e., their product is negative. If one or both of the integers is 0, their product is 0. Examples: Product of two positive integers: Just multiply the numbers. 5 x 4 = 20 Product of two negative numbers: Take the product of their absolute values. (-4) � (-5) = |-4| � |-5| = 4 � 5 = 20 Product of a negative and a positive number: Take the product of their absolute values and give the result a negative sign. -5 x 4 = |-5| � |4| = 5 � 4 = 20, change result to -20, so (-5) � 4 = -20. If any integer is 0: The product is 0. 4 x 0 = 0 -5 x 0 = 0 0 x 4 = 0 0 x-9 = 0 Remember the following points: 1. The product of two positive integers is a positive integer. 2. The product of a positive integer and a negative integer is a negative integer. 3. The product of two negative integers is a positive integer. More examples: 1.
