3.22 Eclipses

An eclipse is an astronomical event that occurs when one celestial object moves into the shadow of another.

A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon's shadow crosses the Earth's surface. During a solar eclipse, the Moon perfectly covers the Sun. This is because the Sun is 400 times farther away from the Earth than the Moon and the Sun is 400 times larger than the Moon. This was not the case 100 million years ago (when the Moon was closer to the Earth), and it will cease to be the case in the distant future.

A lunar eclipse occurs when the Moon moves into the shadow of the Earth. During a lunar eclipse, the Earth obscures the Sun, from the Moon's point of view. The Moon moves through the shadow cast by the Earth. This can only happen at full moon.
