Grade 2 - English Language
1.30 Syllables

Syllables are chunks of sound. All words have at least one syllable. In English, syllables normally have a vowel or the letter 'y' in them. Syllables can be just one letter or a group of letters - it's the sound that matters.

If you say these words aloud you will hear the chunks or beats of sound:

walk, go, home (these words have 1 syllable)
happy, birthday, because (these words have 2 syllables)
September, underneath, Internet (these words have 3 syllables)

You clap to know how many syllables a word has, you read the word and stop at each vowel sound.

Directions: Answer the following questions. Write five examples each for 1, 2, 3, and 4 syllable words. Read a book and find words with four or more syllables.
