2.33 Algebraic Equations

Statement: Two expressions joined by an equal sign. They are classified as 'true statements' or 'false statements.'

False Statements: They are statements where both sides of the equal sign are not of the same value.

True Statements: They are statements where both sides of equal sign are of the same value. True Statements are classified as Identity, Formula, and Equation.

Identity: A statement that is true for all values of the variables.

Formula: A special equation that uses symbols to describe a rule.

Equation: A statement that is true for some but not all values of the variables. Equations are useful for relating variables and numbers. Many word problems can easily be written down as equations with a little practice. Many simple rules exist for simplifying equations.

Examples of equations:
2 = 2
17 = 2 + 15
x = 7
7 = x
t + 3 = 8
3 n +12 = 100
w + 4 = 12 - w
y - 1 - 2 - 9.3 = 34
3 (d + 4) - 11 = 321 - 23

Directions: Translate the following word problem into equations. Also, write ten more example word problems and translate them into equations.
Q 1: A number increased by nine is fifteen.
y + 9 = 15
y - 9 = 15
y9 = 15
9y = 15
