Method:
- Compare the given fractions.
- Ascending Order- Arranging in increasing order (smaller to bigger using < sign).
- Descending Order - Arranging in decreasing order (bigger to smaller using > sign).
- To compare like fractions: Look at the value of numerators and arrange accordingly.
- To compare unlike fractions: Make the denominators common by finding LCM and then compare.
Example: 1/2, 5/2, 7/2 Arrange in descending order.
Since they are like fractions, compare the numerators.
7>5>1
Hence 7/2 > 5/2 > 1/2
Answer: 7/2, 5/2, 1/2
Example : 5/3, 1/2, 3/4 Arrange in ascending order.
These fractions are not like fractions.
Find LCM of the 3, 2 and 4
Multiples of 3 - 3, 6, 9, 12
Multiples of 2 - 2, 4, 6, 8, 10,12
Multiples of 4 - 4, 8, 12
Common multiple is 12 and hence the LCM
LCM is 12.
Multiply and divide each fraction by LCM
5/3 x 12/12 = 20/12
1/2 x 12/12 = 6/12
3/4 x 12/12 = 9/12
From the above 6/12<9/12<20/12
Hence 1/2<3/4<5/3
Answer: 1/2, 3/4, 5/3
Directions: Arrange the following in ascending or descending order. Also write at least ten examples of your own.
