MEAP Preparation - Grade 6 Mathematics
5.5 Mean, Median, & Mode

  1. The least number in a list of numbers is the minimum.
  2. The highest number in a list of numbers is the maximum.
  3. The difference between the maximum and minimum gives the range.
  4. The central number in a number list is the median.
    If there are two numbers in the middle the median is the average of the two number.
  5. The number that repeats very often is called the mode.
    There can be more than one mode in the set of numbers.
Example: 1, 4, 5, 8, 11- Of these numbers which is the maximum?
11 is the greatest number in the list and hence the maximum.
Answer: 11

Example: 9, 12, 56, 45, 22- Of these numbers which is the minimum?
9 is the least number in the list and hence the minimum.
Answer: 9

Example:: 21, 6, 7, 9, 4 - Of these numbers, what is the range?
The maximum is 21 and minimum is 4.Hence range is 21 - 4
Answer: 17

Example:: 3. 4. 5. 3. 6.7 - Of these numbers what is the mode?
The number that repeats often is the mode.
Answer: 3

Example: 12, 15, 23, 7, 10, 19, 25, 17, 21, 14, 11 - Of these numbers, what is the median?
First arrange the numbers in ascending order
7, 10, 11, 12, 14, 15, 17, 19, 21, 23, 25
The central number in the above list is 15 and hence the median.
Answer: 15
