3.6 Counting Coins

Counting Coins Facts:
  • 1 penny = 1 cent
  • 1 nickel = 5 cents
  • 1 dime = 10 cents
  • 1 quarter = 25 cents
  • 1 dollar = 100 cents
  1. Look at the question.
    • q represents quarter = 25 cents,
    • d represents dime = 10,
    • n represents nickel = 5,
    • p represents penny = 1
  2. Calculate the amount for quarters, dimes, nickles and dimes
  3. Add the sum
Example: q q q p p p n n
In the above there are 3 quarters, 3 pennies, 2 nickels
3 quarters = 25+25+25 = 75 cents
2 pennies = 2 cents
2 nickels = 5+5 = 10 cents
Hence on adding we get 75+2+10 = 87 cents
Answer: 87
