Grade 5 - Mathematics
4.2 Dividing Decimal by a Decimal Number

Method:
  1. First we remove the decimal point from the denominator by multiplying both the numerator and the denominator by 10, 100, 1000 etc
  2. Perform the division operation as usual.
  3. Round the answer to one decimal point.
Example: Divide 5.04 by 1.4
We have 3.04 ÷ 1.4 = 5.04/1.4
Here the dividend is 2 place decimal and divisor is 1 place decimal. So change the divisor into a whole number as:

Therefore 5.04 ÷ 1.4 = 3.6
Answer: 3.6

Example: Divide 31.5 by 1.05
We have 31.5 ÷ 1.05 = 31.5 / 1.05
Here the divisor is 2 place decimal. So we multiply it by 100 to convert it into a whole number as:

Therefore 31.5 ÷ 1.05 = 30
Answer: 30

Example: Divide 147.492 by 2.04
We have 147.492 ÷ 2.04 = 147.492 / 2.04

Therefore 147.492 ÷ 2.04 = 72.3
Answer: 72.3

Example: Divide 691.68 by 52.4
We have 691.68 ÷ 52.4 = 691.68 / 52.4

Therefore 691.68 ÷ 52.4 = 13.2
Answer: 72.3
