Grade 4 - Mathematics
1.24 More Than One Type of Operation
Addition and Subtraction of Positive and Negative Numbers:
6 - 5 = 1
or -5 + 6 = 1
5 - 6 = -1
or -6 + 5 = -1
-6 - 5 = -11
6 + 5 = 11
Examples:
25 - 4 + 9
First add the two numbers, 25 and 9 which gives 34.
Subtract 4 from 34, 34-4 = 30
Answer: 30
45 - 56 - 67
Subtract 45-56, since 56 is greater, we subtract 45 from 56 and put the sign of the negative number. This gives -11
Now the problem reduces to -11 - 67 which gives -78.(When there are two negative numbers, find their sum and use the negative sign)
Answer: -78
