MEAP Preparation - Grade 5 Mathematics 1.43 Dividing Large Numbers
Divide the dividend by the divisor.
Find the quotient and remainder if any.
Example: 1267/7
Take the first digit of the divisor that is 1. 1 is lesser than the dividend 7. Therefore take the next digit in the divisor. Hence 12 is divided by 7.
7 x 1 = 7, put 1 in the quotient
Subtract 7 from 12 which leaves a remainder 5
Bring down 6
56 is divided by 7
7 x 8 = 56, put 8 in the quotient
Subtract 56 from 56 which leaves a remainder 0
Bring down the last digit of the dividend that is 7
7 divides 7 once or 7 x 1 = 7, put 1 in the quotient
Subtract 7 from 7 which leaves the remainder 0
