3.7 Counting Money

Counting Money Facts:
  • 1 penny = 1 cent
  • 1 nickel = 5 cents
  • 1 dime = 10 cents
  • 1 quarter = 25 cents
  • 1 dollar = 100 cents
  1. Look at the question.
    • Q represents quarter = 25 cents,
    • D represents dime = 10,
    • N represents nickel = 5,
    • P represents penny = 1
  2. Count the number of quarters, dimes, nickles and dimes
  3. Calculate the amount of cents for each
  4. Add the sum
Method:
  1. Look at the question. Q is quarter = 25 cents, D is dime = 10, N is nickel = 5, P is penny = 1, $ is dollar = 100
  2. Count the number of quarters, dimes, nickles and dimes
  3. Calculate the amount of cents for each
  4. Add the sum.
Example:
Q D D
In the above there are 1 quarters, 2 dimes
1 quarter = 25 cents
2 dimes = 10+10 = 20 cents
Hence on adding we get 25+20 = 45 cents

Answer: $0.45
