MEAP Preparation - Grade 4 Mathematics
1.60 Compare Numbers In Millions

Method
  1. Look at the numbers carefully.
  2. Rule 1: If a number has more digits than another, it is greater of the two.
  3. Rule 2: If two numbers have the same number of digits, we compare them by their extreme left-most digits. The number with the greater digit is greater.
  4. If the extreme left-most digits are the same, we compare them by their next digits to the right and so on.
Example: 234,567,876 ? 334,345,456
Both the numbers have the same number of digits, so we compare the digits.
Staring from the left most digits of the two numbers: 2 < 3
Answer: <

Example: 234,567,876 ? 234,567,456
Both the numbers have the same number of digits, so we compare the digits.
Staring from the left most digits (hundred millions place) of the two numbers: 2 = 2
Comparing next numbers (ten millions place) are 3 = 3
Comparing next numbers (millions place) are 4 = 4
Comparing next numbers (hundred thousands place) are 5 = 5
Comparing next numbers (ten thousands place) are 6 = 6
Comparing next numbers (thousands place) are 7 = 7
Comparing next numbers (hundreds place) are 8 > 4
Therefore 234,567,876 > 234,567,456
Answer: >
