U.S. Senator Barack Obama made history in June 2008, when he became the first African-American presidential nominee of a major political party. But he declared his goal of becoming a president when he was in grade school in Indonesia more than 35 years ago.

In an interview with Voice Of America's Indonesian Service, Obama's third-grade teacher said he wrote in a class assignment that he wanted to be president. The assignment was called, "What do you want to be when you grow up?"

Barak Obama had a difficult childhood and faced many obstacles. Despite the strikes against him, he turned his life around, graduating from Columbia University and spending years as a community organizer. He then went on to be a star at Harvard Law School, becoming the first African-American president of the renowned Harvard Law Review before returning to public service.

One of the most famous lines in Obama's speeches was: "There is not a black America and a white America, a Latino America, an Asian America. There's the United States of America."

Senator Obama has promoted a long list of educational reforms he is in favor of, ranging from increased access to Advanced Placement courses to expanding summer school programs. Generally, the common thread in his educational positions is his belief that school funding must be increased in all aspects of education.
