Grade 2 - Mathematics
1.19 Subtraction - One Digit

Method:

  1. Start counting after the second number.
  2. Count till you reach the first number.

Example:

The first number 5 is called subtrahend and 3 is called the minuend.
We need to start counting after 3 till we reach 5.
When we start counting after 3 that is 4,5, hence it takes 2 numbers after 3 to reach 5.
Answer: 2

Alternate Method - Using symbols or patterns
5 = $ $ $ $ $
Since the number to be subtracted is 3 we remove 3 patterns out of 5, that leaves us with 2.

Directions: Subtract the following. Write subtraction facts for 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9 and 10
