American History
2.19 Death of William Penn

Philadelphia grew very fast. Penn gave lands at cheap cost to the settlers. He also allowed them to frame their own laws. After Philadelphia became a quite good sized town, everybody seemed to be able to take care of himself.

When the revolution broke out, the men from Pennsylvania, of North and South and from Philadelphia discussed at the old state House, which is still standing. This meeting was called Congress. The Congress announced the 1776 that USA is independent of England. The people from Delaware, New Jersey and Penn, Philadelphia fought together.

William Penn spent a great deal of money in helping the settlers. After he returned to England he was put in prison for debt by a unworthy man who was an employee of him. Penn proved that he was not to owe money to a man who said that he did was no better than thief. Penn was released, but his long confinement in jail had broken down his health. His death mourned by the Indians Penn and sent some beautiful furs to the widow of Penn in remembrance of him. They used to call him "Brother Penn"

William Penn was buried in a friends meeting house or Quackers Church which is situated within the sight of the towers of Windsor castle. It is twenty five miles west of London. More than hundred years there was no mark of any kind to show his grave yard but now a small stone bearing his name points out the grave of the founder of the great statue of Pennsylvania.
