2.16 Pennsylvania - Penn's woods

You may be knowing the states of New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Philadelphia etc are the wealthiest states in America. Who developed these places? they were "Quackers". These places were bought by them for their settlement. Like the pilgrims and the catholics, these quackers had not enjoyed any peace in England. Hence, under the leadership of William Penn they started settling in wilderness. The quackers suffered quite a lot in England. They were cruelly whipped, thrown into a dark and filthy prisons where many died of the bad treatment. William Penn himself was imprisoned four times on account of his religion. Though he was no longer in such danger as the King was his friend, yet he wanted to provide a safe place for other quackers who were not so well off as he was.

King Charles II of England owed a large sum of money to William Penn. The King was fond of pleasure and he spent so much money on himself and his friends, that he had none to pay his debts. As Penn knew this, he asked his majesty if he would give him a piece of wild land in America, he would ask nothing more. Charles was very glad to settle the account of Penn. He therefore, gave Penn a great territory North of Maryland and the west of Delaware river. This territory was as large as England.
