New Page 1

PART OF WINDSOR CASTLE.

Lord Baltimore had been brought up by a Protestant, but became a Catholic. Then Catholics were ill-treated in England. They were ordered by law to attend the church of England. They did not like church any better than pilgrims. If they disobeyed they had to take their choice between paying a large sum of money or going to prison.

Lord Baltimore aspired to make settlement for English Catholics in the wilderness of Newfoundland, but the land frozen out through the good share of the year, they could raise as the land was as hard as iron. The search for Baltimore took place while Standish was developing Plymouth. When Baltimore's effort of making settlement in Newfoundland was given up, his friend King Charles I gave him a piece of land in Virginia, north of the Potomac[1] River.

That land was given the name Maryland or Mary land after the name of Queen Mary who was also a Catholic. The area of the land was twelve thousand square miles with water. For this land Lord Baltimore had to give a rent of two Indian arrows in every spring to the royal palace of Windsor [2] Castle near London. Despite the fact, the King had entitled Baltimore to enjoy all rights of the land, at the same time he did not want to give up the right of the land, for that the rent was fixed.
