### Grade 7 - Mathematics3.4 Integer Exponents

• Exponents are a short method of showing repeated multiplication.
• Exponents can be shown as
x5
x is called the base and the number 5 is called the exponent.
• Integers are positive numbers, zero and negative numbers {........-3,-2,-1,0,1,2,3.......}
• Expressions with integers as exponents are called Integer exponents.
Example:
x2 positive exponent
x-2 negative exponent
x0 exponent with power zero
• Any number or variable to the power of zero is 1, when x does not equal 0.
x can be anything (except zero), including numbers, variables, or an equation.
x0 = 1
50 = 1
(x+5=2x)0 = 1
• Any number or variable to the power of 1 gives the number.
x1 = x
51 = 5
• Any number or variable to the negative power equals 1 divided by the exponent with the postive power.
x-n = 1/xn when x does not equal 0.
x-1 = 1/x1
x-3 = 1/x3
2-3 = 1/23 = 1/8
5-3 = 1/53 = 1/125
 Positive exponents Negative exponents Exponets with power zero xn = x . x . x ......n times x-n = 1/x .x .x .......n times =1/xn x0 = 1 23 = 2 x 2 x 2 = 8 2-3 = 1/23 = 1/8 50 = 1 32 = 3 x 3 = 9 3-2 = 1/32 = 1/9 3000 = 1
