Mode of Ungrouped Data

Mode
  • The mode of a set of data values is the number in the set that appears most frequently.
  • There can be more than one mode.
  • If the set of data values have two numbers occuring the same number of times. Then the data set has two modes or data set is bimodal.
  • If no number appears more than once, then the data set has no mode.
Example 1:
The students in Mrs.J's class have the following ages: 5, 9, 1, 3, 4, 6, 6, 6, 7, 3. Find the mode of their ages.
The most common number to appear on the list is 6, which appears three times. No other number appears that many times.
Therefore the mode of their ages is 6.

Example 2:
Find the mode of the data set 1, 2, 2, 3, 3, 4, 5.
The most common number to appear on the list are 2 and 3.
Therefore the mode of data are 2 and 3.
This data set is bimodal.

Example 3:
Find the mode of the data: 12, 15 19 20, 12, 14, 15, 12, 11
The most common number to appear on the list is 12 and it occurs three times.
Therefore the mode of the data is 12.
