Median
The students in Mrs.H's class have the following ages: 4, 29, 4, 3, 4, 11, 16, 14, 17, 3. Find the median of their ages. Order the data: 3, 3, 4, 4, 4, 11, 14, 16, 17, 29. The number of ages is 10, so the middle numbers are 4 and 11, which are the 5th and 6th entries on the ordered list. The median is the average of these two numbers: (4 + 11)/2 = 15/2 = 7.5 Example 2: The students of Mrs.B's class have the following scores: 41, 60, 47, 42, 44, 42, and 47. Find the median of their scores. Ascending order of the scores: 41, 42, 42, 44, 47, 47, 60. The number of scores is 7, so the middle number is the 4th number. Therefore the median is 44.
