7.7 Logarithms - Introduction

Logarithms and indices are closely related. Just as repeated addition of the same summand evolves a new operation, namely, multiplication; the repeated multiplication by the same factor evolves a new operation called exponentiation.

Example: Write 45 = 1024 in the logarithmic form.
Solution: log1024 = 5

Example: Find log2 16
Solution: logab = m
Hence am = b , a > 0, a not equal to 1
m = log216, then 2m = 16
Since 16 = 24
Hence m = 4
