3.16 Erosion

Erosion can be classified as:
  • Geological Erosion
  • Accelerated Erosion
Geological erosion: This is caused naturally and does not cause any imbalance in nature.

Accelerated Erosion: Accelerated erosion can be caused by man's activities, such as agriculture and construction, which alter the natural state of the environment.

The three types of soil erosion are:

  • Sheet erosion
  • Rill erosion
  • Gully erosion
Sheet erosion: Sheet erosion is defined as the uniform removal of soil in thin layers from sloping land. This is washed off by rain.

Rill erosion: It occurs when soil is removed by water from little streams that run through land with poor surface draining. Rills can often be found in between crop rows.

Gully erosion: Gullies are larger rills and hence large amounts of soils are lost.
