  • Dividing is separating a number into several equal groups.
  • When we divide 12 by 3 we are separating 12 into 3 equal groups of 4.
  • Division can be written as 12/3 or 12 3.
  • Dividing 0 by any number:
    • 0 divided by any number is 0.
    • Example: 0/5 = 0
  • Dividing by 0 is not defined.
    • Numbers cannot be divided by 0 because it is impossible to make 0 groups of a number.
    • 4/0 = not defined
  • Dividing by 1:
    • Any number divided by 1 equals that number.
    • If you divide by 1 you have one group and so everything is in that group.
    • Example: 5/1 = 5
Example: 49/7
49 can be divided into 7 groups of 7.
