3.27 Causes for Salinity of Sea Water

We are aware of the fact that seas and oceans are formed by many rivers. These rivers during their course of movement, pick up small amounts of mineral salts from the rocks and from the river-beds. During evaporation or freezing its only the water that undergoes change leaving behind the salt content. Hence salinity increases more and more.

The salinity of ocean water varies. One cubic foot of average sea water contains 2.2 pounds of salt. Some of the salts found in the sea water are bromide, calcium, potassium, and bicarbonate. The saltiest water is in the Red Sea and in the Persian Gulf -- the reason for this is the high rate of evaporation and less rain water influx in these waters. The least salty seas are in the polar regions -- the reason for this is dissolving of salt by rain water and melting in these regions.
Directions: Answer the following questions.
Q 1: The water in the polar regions is less salty because of
rain water influx
heavy ocean traffic

Q 2: Which of these is also called 'common salt', 'table salt', or 'edible salt'?
sodium chloride
potassium chloride
sodium nitrate

Q 3: The saltiest ocean is the
Red Sea
Arctic Ocean
Pacific Ocean
Indian Ocean

Q 4: The seas are salty because
rivers bring in salts
salt is produced in the sea
salt moves from soil to sea
