4.4 How We See Things

What is reflection? When light falls on a body and is bounced back, it is called reflection. The light ray that falls on the object is the incident ray and the ray of light that is reflected is called the reflected ray. The angle of incidence is equal to the angle of reflection.

The objects that we see around us can be classified as:

  • Luminous objects
  • Non-luminous objects
Reflection occurs best on smooth and polished surfaces like mirrors. All that we see around us is a result of reflection.

Luminous objects: Luminous objects are objects which generate their own light.

Non-luminous or Illuminated objects: Illuminated objects are objects which are capable of reflecting light to our eyes. These reflect the light of the luminous objects.
Example:Moon, all that we see around us is a result of the sun's light.
