4.17 Electricity

Almost everything that we use in our modern day lives is powered by electricity. Television, toasters, computers, bulbs -- all of these use electricity.

What is electricity?
Electricity is the flow of electrons from one atom to another.

What is an atom?
All substances are made up of atoms. Atoms are made up of electrons, protons, and neutrons.

  • The electrons are negatively charged.
  • The protons are positively charged.
  • The neutrons are neutrally charged, i.e., they are neither negatively nor positively charged.

An atom is made up of a central nucleus, around which the electrons spin similar to the way the moon spins around the earth. The nucleus is made up of the neutrons.

Some atoms have more number of electrons than protons and hence they are negatively charged while some have more number of protons than electrons and hence they are positively charged.

Just imagine a piece of wire, through which electricity passes. The electrons pass from one atom to another and the link thus formed is the flow of electricity.

Directions: Answer the following questions.
Q 1: Atoms that have more number of protons are negatively charged.

Q 2: Electricity is caused by the movement of electrons.

Q 3: The electrons are negatively charged.

Q 4: All substances are made up of a large number of atoms.

Q 5: The centre of an atom is called
