### High School Mathematics9.2 Coordinate Plane - Quadrants

If we place two number lines at right angles, intersecting at their origins, we obtain a two-dimensional rectangular coordinate system. It is also called Cartesian coordinate system. The number lines intersect at the origin. The horizontal line is called the x-axis. The vertical line is called the y-axis. The plane into which the coordinates system is introduced is the coordinate plane or xy-plane. The x-axis and y-axis divide the plane into four region, or quadrants. The points on the x-axis or y-axis belong to no quadrant. In the first quadrant Q1 the coordinates x and y are (+,+). That is a positive real number and a positive real number. In the second quadrant Q2 the coordinates x and y are (-,+). That is a negative real number and a positive real number. In the third quadrant Q3 the coordinates x and y are (-,-). That is a negative real number and a negative real number. In the fourth quadrant Q4 the coordinates x and y are (+,-). That is a positive real number and a negative real number. Directions: Choose the correct answer. Also take a graph paper and draw 4 quadrants and plot 30 points in all the four quadrants.
