Rule: When a one-syllable word ends in the cvc (consonant - vowel - consonant) combination, usually double the final consonant when adding a suffix that begins with a vowel but do not double it when adding a suffix that begins with a consonant.
Examples:
ship + ment = shipment
warm + ing = warming
treat + ed = treated Rule: When a word of more than one-syllable ends in the cvc combination and it is accented on the last syllable, usually double the final consonant when adding a suffix that begins with a vowel but do not double it when adding a suffix that begins with a consonant.
Examples:
commit + ment = commitment Directions: Using the rules given above, find the correct spelling of the words formed in the questions. On a sheet of paper, write the suffix spelling rules described in this chapter and give your own examples. As homework, read a book and find words with suffixes and group them based on the spelling rules described in this chapter. |
